I summarized this yesterday, but have since received an additional response
I want to add to my summary.
Problem:

Solutions:
a. Move /.Xauthority to another name. I did this, logged in again,
everything works.
b. rlm_at_syseca-us.com suggested that NIS could be a problem, and
that you should check /etc/svc.conf to be sure 'yp' wasn't in
the hosts entry. The NIS server could have gone away because
of the IP address change.
