Origial problem:
================
system panic after DUV40BAS00004-19970808 patches applied.
Commentary:
===========
OK, it wasn't as straight forward as that.
Problem details:
================
I had blown up the first attempt at applying the patchs. Actually dec
had shot me in the foot on my first attempt.
I had installed a newer release of gzip on the system, and the patch process
blew up while trying to run /usr/bin/gzip. I don't remember explicitly
removing /usr/bin/gzip (I didn't even know dec had put it there), but the new
install process to /usr/local/bin may have killed it. I would have expected a
very serious script like this patch from dec to check to make sure an
executable was there before trying to run it.
So, I am not sure what state the system was after that. I
knew I was probably looking at a reinstall, so, I
pressed on and:
- put the new gzip in /usr/bin
- applied the patches again
- in single user mode try to do a kernel build
- it blew up
- posted to this list
- removed the patches (I had built the backout dir)
- applied patches again
- rebuilt the kernel
- doconfig worked this time
- booted the new kernel
More commentary:
================
The same kind of thing happened to me with tcl. DEC installs some
old hacked v7.2 tcl as part of their system management apps. I removed it,
because it is in my way of using a current version. Now the system
management stuff is broken. DEC, don't do that. Or if you do, make a path
to get updates for current versions.

When you did the kernel build, what state were you in? Single or Multi? Did
you boot fropm genvmunix? If not, then try the following:
shutdown now
cp /vmunix /vmunix.old
cp /genvmunix /vmuninx
shutdown -h now
>>>boot -fl s
bcheckrc
cd /sys/conf
doconfig -c HOSTNAME (Where HOSTNAME is the name of your system's config file)
cp /sys/HOSTNAME/vmunix /vmunix
shutdown -r now

If you have Digital support, the proper way to contact Digital is call
1-800-354-900 to contact the Digital Customer Support Center (CSC). Sending
it to this list is a fishing expedition.
PS:
===
The patches have gone on other systems very simply. This
experience not the norm, and so I thought it worth mentioning.
Have a nice day.
