Hello Sys Admins,

  I have a problem w/ an Alphastation 200 4/166, DU 4.0b. It can't
start the X-server. The machine was fresh out of the box. Powered it
on. It asked the initial questions. It installed the included
software. It rebuilt the kernel and then rebooted.

There were no strange messages when booting, then:

    *************************************************************
    *
    * Starting Desktop Login on display :0...
    *
    * Wait for the Desktop Login screen before logging in.
    *
    *************************************************************

(System pauses here, for a few seconds)

    *************************************************************
    *
    * The X-server can not be started on display :0...
    *
    *************************************************************

    *************************************************************
    *
    * Supending Desktop Login...
    *
    * Press [Enter] for the Login prompt.
    *
    *************************************************************

I've looked in the alpha-osf-managers archive and did not find a
direct solution. I do know that someone else with this problem
did an upgrade install and that fixed the problem. However, for
other reasons I would prefer not doing an upgrade install. I would
like a more direct solution.

I also tried:
    # /usr/bin/X11/X
    syntax error at line 1

    Fatal server error:
Failed to establish all listening sockets

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!!

Thanks,
odk
