Hello,

First, thanks to Jeff Micono for responding. Even though his
response was not the solution, I list it because it may help
someone else:

The Problem and SOLUTION:
The problem turned out to be a corrupt file,
/usr/var/X11/Xserver.conf. This file is read by the Xserver, Xdec.
The beginning of the file was corrupt. We have more than one of these
machines. So I replaced the corrupt file with a copy from a working
unit. Worked like a charm. I have no idea what caused the
corruption.
