tar recovered / ( problems )

Perhaps somebody can suggest how to repair a system.

Due to a disk problem, the root ("/") file system had to be recovered
from a tar tape backup.
After this operation the system is not working properly.

Three problems which have so far been noticed are:
 - can not login as an ordinary user on the console with CDE running
   (no problem with root login)
 - can not start xdm on the console

" Cannot load library dix: dlopen: Cannot map library libdix.so
Cannot find or open library libdix.so in path:
   :/usr/local/lib/root/lib/X11::/usr/local/lib/root/lib
Cannot load all core libraries. "

 - ftp does not work properly

I believe that all the files from the / directory have been
restored from the tape. I currently suspect that some absolute
links were not properly restored. (The disk was temporarily
mounted under a different dircetory name and tar was used with the "s"
option, i.e. leading slashes were stripped off).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions how to fix the problem !

Marcin
