Dear Managers,
A few users of our AlphaServer 8400 running DU 4.0B (patched) are experiencing
the following problem:
- Their Fortran programs can't run until completion.
- The error message they get is, say: 19576 Memory fault
- The same programs used to work fine before the summer (i.e. before the #4
August patch kit was installed)
I've read in the archives that this error message is usually related to the
shell built in process limits. If I type the csh command "limit" (or the ksh
"ulimit -a") as one of them, I see that:
datasize 2097152 kbytes memoryuse 2056904 kbytes
stacksize 2097152 kbytes vmemoryuse 2097152 kbytes
I know that the maximum datasize/stacksize values per user depend on the maxdsiz/
maxssiz defined on /sys/conf/MYSYSTEM, and their current values (maxusers 128) are:
dfldsiz 2147483648 maxdsiz 2147483648
dflssiz 2147483648 maxssiz 2147483648
My questions are:
- Are these maximum values reasonable for an AlphaServer 8400 with 2 GB RAM and
4.3 GB swap? Can anyone explain to me why should upper limits be set for the
datasize/stacksize (or point me to the adequate manual)
- Can our problem be related with any of the patches in the #4 kit? Or with not
having done something after the dupatch session? (I did rebuild the kernel at
the end!)
I had some other problems after the patch kit installation (see my posting of
Sep 26 "Kernel crashes AlphaServer 8400") and have received some useful hints
which I'll summarize soon (couldn't reboot to try out any of them yet)
Thanks in advance,
Lucia Gonzalez
