mt commands with TZ887 tape drive

I have a TZ887 tape drive in a "DLT 7-Cartridge Mini Library" -
i.e. a tape stacker. This is on an Alpha 8400 running DU 4.0A.

When I try to use mt commands with this device, and vdump and
vrestore, the tape seems to rewind after each command completes.
even though I specify a non-rewinding device (/dev/nrmt0h) and
even if I add the -N switch of no rewind to vdump.

Does anyone out there have experience with this device?
The slim Owner's Manual that I finally unearthed for it mentions
VMS, Windows NT, Novel, MS-DOS and Windows, but not UNIX, so
I'm a little nervous about whether it will behave as I expect
and need to accomplish UNIX dumps.

Thanks, as always, for any help.
