For the magic...
setenv GS_FONTPATH /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1Adobe:/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.3/fonts
Which tells gs to use the adobe fonts from the X font collection.
OK so that has cured my immediate problem but in chasing this I
have been told that alphabet.ps in the examples should test the fonts.
Needless to say this has problems and substitutes courier for Palatino italic
So I am still missing some magic.
Just to clear everything up...
Ghostscript 5.03 is installed on a package server that links gs into /usr/local/bin
and the share stuff links to /usr/local/share/ghostscript so I have...
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts - with all of the std and supplementary fonts
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.03 - a load of upp and ps files that I don't understand
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.03/examples - the examples including alphabet.ps
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.03/doc - load of txt
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.03/fonts - with all of the std and supplementary fonts
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts -symlink to /usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.03/fonts
GS_FONTPATH=/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1Adobe:/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.3/fonts
GS_LIB=/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.3
>strings `which gs` | grep local
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.03/doc
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/5.03:/usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts
So, come on people - how do I get the other fonts working??
