"NO DIRECTORY" when login

Hi,

I came across a very odd problem. I was trying to install COPS(a
utility package) and suddenly I could not
login other that root. All other users would see a "no directory" error
and login would be prevented.

I checked that "passwd" and all user directories were there. No C2 is
used here.

Any ideas?
