Once again this forum solves another problem.

The answer was very simple, there are 2 versions of the ps command SYS V and
BSD, and I was using the SYS V version which automatically truncates to 80
columns, the above people suggested I try the BSD version using the following
ps auxw (note: no "-")
this worked fine.
I recently moved to DU from a HPUX machine, so please excuse my ignorance in
not realising about the different version.
