LaserJet 5M using bootp

Hi there,

We bought a HP LaserJet 5M printer and connected it to the network.
The problem is that the printer came with software for Micro$oft
only. I configured it via telnet and it works fine except that
when it is printing it does not respond to lpq. That's bad because
users like to see the status of the queue before sending a file to
the printer.

I looked in the web site of HP and found a package called JetAdmin
to manage the printer but it exists only for Solaris and SunOS 4.1.x.
Since we also have these OSs I downloaded the package but found that I need
bootp. I couldn't find a port of bootpd for Sun.

Since DU already comes with bootpd I would like to boot the printer from an
Alpha (we have DU 3.2G). Have anybody on these list done that?. Is there a
way to install JetAdmin on a AlphaStation?.

The enty in my printcap for this printer is:

lj5|hplj5|Hewlett Packard LaserJet 5M Laser printer:\
        :lp=:rm=lj5:rp=text:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lp-remote/hplj5:\
        :lf=/var/adm/lpd-errs:

Am I missing something?. rp=text is to add a carrige return to the
end of every line. This is needed to print ascii files. For some
postcript files this does not work, rp=raw have to be used instead
(the file is sent untouched to the printer). It would be nice to have
only one queue defined for the printer instead of one for ascii files and
another for postcript (a common mistake users will make is to send ascii
files the the raw queue).

I would also appreciate if someone can tell me where I can find source code
for bootp ported to Solaris or SunOS 4.1.x.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Miguel
