Hi,
Have been lurking here a little while and now have a question. I am new
to DUNIX and Alphas but have worked for years with Solaris and SunOS. I
ran into a problem today that had me stumped. I pulled my Alpha 255 out
of the box and it had factory installed 4.0B on it. I tried to mount
the cdrom but was unable to do so. Eventually I learned that you have
to recompile the kernel to include options CDFS, but I pounded on the
box for a couple of hours before I realized this assuming there was some
syntax error with my mount statement.
I also fumbled into learning that you also have to recompile for options
PACKETFILTER if you want to use tcpdump. That also burned a couple of
hours that could have been better spent.
I have read the Dunix FAQ and gone through a lot of their documentation
and man pages online. Does anyone have any recommendations of sites,
online references, etc that will ease this transition for me? Little
Alpha "gotchas" like the two I have mentioned can waste a lot of time.
Any recommendations of "starting points" would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Andrew Townsend
