SUBJECT: SUMMARY - Root -encapsulated Mirror Failure - Boot hang
TO: alpha-osf-managers_at_ornl.gov
-------------------
[Original] Problem:
If you physically yank one of the root disks, either primary or
[non-default] mirror, MACHINE will panic to the chevron prompt
(instead of 'sync-ing' to mirror).
-----------------------------------
SUMMARY:
I only had one reply to my question. [It is well understood as
this problem is very complex and not too widespread because of
the complexity of the configuration].

My thanks to Peter A Kemp pkemp_at_rockdale.com.au
who wrote:
"I believe your problem may be that under 3.2x of Digital Unix I am told
that LSM did not work from a root mirror without the original disk in
situ. I am told that under 4.0x this has been resolved, however,
you need to re-install LSM and the root disks with current versions."
-----
Thanks again, Peter.
-----------------------------------
I did get both cpus to boot standalone and discovered that advFS
was 'hosed'. So, we are in the process of starting from scratch
[AGAIN] and reloading the OS and 'doing' the system. We still believe
that the basic problem is jumbo-patch related so we will pay special
attention [AGAIN] to that part of the reload.
-----------------------------------
Two other issues that I am using this SUMMARY for:

1. Below my [dot] signature you will find a list of (not-so-obscure)
literature which is a must for any of you that are using Memory Channel
or Tru-Cluster ASE. It also will assist immeasureably in the use of
AdvFS, LSM and other strickly Digital Unix issues. (I obtained
mine during my contract to Digital in Colorado Springs and can be
of no help in how to "obtain" them other than to say "contact your
Digital Rep" with their part numbers.)

2. Digital has an internal search engine server called "Comet" which
is used by their (Unix) Support Personnel to locate information by
ERROR code, etcetera. It is [virtually] identical to Sun Microsystems
internal search engine that SUN's Support Personnel use to assist their
customers. As everyone knows, SUN released an external PRODUCT called
SunSolve as well as internet conductivity to the (external) site. I
urge each of you (alpha-osf-managers) to INDIVIDUALLY 'LOBBY' your
Digital Rep (not me, your Digital Rep) to have Digital release an
equivalent to SunSolve and give us an (external) site to search
ERROR code(s), etcetera. I know of no Formal way to get this
'product' developed by Digital but hope (springs eternal) that
mentioning it here will assist in it's implementation.

Best regards.
