Thanks to Alan Rollow.
I actually got his reply before I received my own question.
Question :
I have always added entries for disks into the /sys/conf/NAME
file. I just added a disk to a 255/233 V4.0 , and noticed there weren't
any entries for ANY disks in there. I booted the box , and all the disks
show up just fine , even in all the GUIs .
Does the entry for the disks still serve any purpose or is it no
loger required for V4.0 + . Or is it hardware dependent eg: RAID .
Answer :
First, it depends on the driver. I suspect MSCP disks will
always need entries, if only to account for the cases where the host unit
number doesn't match the drive's unit number. Disks going through the
"re" drive may still need them, though it could probably manage not to
need entries. The SCSI driver has progressively managed to not use
configuration file entries through the various versions.
There was a time when you needed them just to get performance
data, but that was fixed. There was a time that root disk
needed to be in the configuration, but I think that has also
been fixed. In V4 I don't think there is anything left that
need information from the configuration for SCSI device
entries. You still need it for controllers, but not devices.
Thanks again ,
