The solution was quite easy, actually.
Halt (crash) the system, boot single user mode (boot -flag s), run bcheckrc to
automount the filesystems, use vi to edit the /etc/passwd file, add user root
without a password, reboot the system either via shutdown or Ctrl-D. (I used the
latter)
