no replies on this one, but i did get it resolved.
i trashed the old popper (popper-1.84 from Berkely Edu.).
got the latest version of qpopper2.4 from the qualcomm site.
compiled and placed the executable.
made the changes in /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf.
checked ps aux to make sure that pop or popper wasn't there.
kill -HUPed inetd.conf, but i got the message "port 110 already in use"
so i kill -HUPed inetd.conf again and it flew.
unfortunately dial-in eudora users still couldn't access mail.
so i did the only thing i thought might help- reboot!
and it works just fine now.
original message:
hi, i have an alphaserver 1000A 5/333 running DU4.0B. installed popper-1.84
last may and it worked great until about a month ago. in house users
can get their mail using eudora just fine, but my users who use dial-in eudora
can no longer access their mail. they get connected and they get a message
that there are messages to download, starts to download the first message then
hangs until the connection times out. anyone seen this before?
