I am trying to add a Seagate Barracuda Ultra-Wide SCSI disk to my Alphastation
500. It was built with the appropriate HD68 connectors.
Configuration before adding the disk:
Internal 4 GB RZ29B wide (16) disk - SCSI 0
Internal CD-ROM RRD46 - SCSI 4
External 9GB Micropolis narrow - SCSI 6
The narrow external disk was/is attached via a HD68 to SCSI-1 cable with the
high byte terminated.
When I add the disk, between the alphastation and the original external disk,
and boot up, I get the following, expected messages:
Dec 4 08:26:55 fudge vmunix: isp0: QLOGIC ISP1020A
Dec 4 08:26:55 fudge vmunix: isp0: Firmware revision 5.01 (loaded by console)

Dec 4 08:26:55 fudge vmunix: rz6 at scsi0 target 6 lun 0 (LID=3) (MICROP 1991-

Note that the new disk, at "target 1" is identified properly as a (Wide16) disk.
However, at the point that my original, narrow disk is supposed to be mounted, I
get:

and rest of the boot continues normally. Both filesets on the 9 GB disk mount
fine and work fine, with the new disk powered down.
I have tried both a passive and (purportedly) active terminator on the end of
the chain (the narrow SCSI disk).
Any suggestions? One thing that occurs to me is that the narrow CD-ROM drive is
somehow making a problem? Or is the Micropolis drive itself to blame, even
though it coexists fine with the RZ29B internal disk? It is confusing that the
initial SCSI scan shows the new disk appropriately.
Thanks for any help.
