tar error: /dev/tty unavailable

Recently, we have seen intermittent failures of a tar backup on an Alpha
Server 1000A running Digital Unix V3.2G (rev 62). We use a TLZ07 tape
drive (firmware rev 4BQE) for the backup medium. The tar command aborts
with the error "/dev/tty unavailable". We run the tar command from cron,
with standard output and standard error redirected to a log file. (It
shouldn't be accessing any ttys).

Has anyone else seen this?
