The question was:

> I have to change some User ID in order to unify UID's among servers
> and clients. We are running DU 4.0B and C2.
>
> Before C2, I would just edit /etc/passwd. Under C2 but before DU4.0B,
> I would also edit the individual files below /tcb/files/auth/*. However,
DU4.0B
> keeps what was in those files in a database file that should not be edited.
> Is there anyway of just modifying the User ID without retiring the user and

I got quickly many answers, thanks to, in order of arrival,

Brian Weaver <weaver_at_psd.k12.co.us>
Bob Sloane <SLOANE_at_KUHUB.CC.UKANS.EDU>

The solution, as suggested by most, was to use "edauth", which I did. One has
then to look for files that belong to the old UID and change the ownership.
These include the home, mail and in our case, scratch, areas.

Some suggested to use usermod, I haven't tried as edauth is ok. dxaccounts and
XIsso do not allow this change, even though some people suggested to use that
approach.

Thanks for the quick and effective help.
