Byte and Word Instructions

The EV56 technology Alpha processor chip supports byte and word
instructions. Does anybody know how to get the compiler to generate
these instructions?

I'm using an Alphastation 500/400 running D.U. 4.0A , I've passed
-tune ev56 to the compiler, but the machine code listing doesn't
show any byte/word instructions, nor does the performance improve
as expected.
