I recently tried to update our AlphaServer 1000 4/233 to DU 4.0B
from DU4.0A. The firmware update (3.8) failed saying that it couldn't
find files for SRM console update. The contents of the CD matched
Digital's ftp site (under 1000 directory). I ftp'ed files and
instructions for making a floppy to do this, and it appeared to work,
although I'm not exactly sure that everything was updated. What the
instructions said what would happen and what did were different.
(Instrcutions said it would ask for a second disk). Anyway, I proceeded
to install DU 4.0B, and the instalation failed on subset 0. I tried to
reboot, and got repeated bus error's, esp. when running ls. I booted off
the CD, and everything seemed okay. At this point, I did a full restore
of / from my 4.0A backup. Anyone else experience any problems?

Also, with the same CDs, I updated a 3000/900 with no problems at
all. I also tried to update a Multia, and the firmware update failed,
saying "ROM JUMPER ON ?" and then failing because of a bad checksum.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, as would replies from any of you
DEC folks as to why CDs never seem to be tested prior to shipping.
