Dec Unix and POP

Hi all,
        I have been running a pop server on a 3000-300 for several years. I am having a problem with mail lock files.
Every so often a users lock mail lock file will not be cleared "/var/spool/mail/username.lock" when this happens
the user can not get their mail or receive mail they can send. When the user tries to get mail from the pop server
they will get "shhhh invalid password" removing the lock clears this up. The system is running 3.2G but I have
seen this problem on other system from 3.0 and up. As a band-aid I have a cron job that clears all the locks
every few hours. Others must be seeing this problem has anyone been able to fix it ???
