No X login window

Hey,

I have been asked to downgrade an Alphastation 255 (233 MHz)
from 4.0b to 3.2d to accomodate some 3rd party software which
does not yet run on 4.0. However, on bootup, the console does
not display the X login window. It looks as if it believes that
it is a serial terminal, rather than a proper console, but the
environment variable for the system is correct, i.e. console =
graphics.

It has been suggested that perhaps an Alphastation 255 can't
be taken back below version 4.0.

Anybody have any suggestions? Much appreciated.

Cheers,
Lyn
