Thanks to the following, which answered to my question in this

up yet!):

Summary:
1) newsgroup for ULTRIX is comp.unix.ultrix
2) ULTRIX does definitely not run on the SPX graphics hardware
3) ULTRIX does definitely not run on Model 78 of VAXstations 3100
4) SPX works as Xwindow terminal (VXT2000 software)
(only DECnet, no TCP/IP though)
5) Model 78 does not work as Xwindow terminal
6) use EWS on the SPX machine
Original question was:
#Sorry, I could not find a newsgroup comp.os.ultrix...
#so I hope someone can point me to the right place
#
#Hardware:
#a) VAXstation 3100 M38 SPX
#b) VAXstation 3100 M78
#
#Problem: I want to run Ultrix/UWS on them.
#
#checked the SPD for Ultrix and for UWS.
#Can't find hardware mentioned above in it.
#
#Tried Ultrix 4.5, UWS 4.5.
#
#a) X11 seems not to run on SPX graphics.
# Is this a "really doesn't work" ???
#
#b) my M78 has only 4MByte RAM.
# Would it work with more RAM?
# Or is the M78 really not supported by Ultrix/UWS?

For a newsgroup you want comp.unix.ultrix. There is also
decstation-managers mailing list served by the same system
doing the alpha-osf-managers list.
a. Does not work. Will never work, unless you want to
write the driver and X server yourself. Around the
time the SPX was released for the VAXstations, the
good TURBOchannel adapters were being released for
the DECstation family. With limited engineering
resource and few really good X server writing, guess
which won...
b. The Model 78 is not supported by ULTRIX. Again it
a resource issue, with the DECstations of the time
being the far more interesting (and generally faster)
system. The Model 38/48 were the last VAXstations
supported by ULTRIX.

You could try to
find a GPX board for the 38, that combo is supported. 4mb is going to do an
awful lot of swapping, too.

It does not work. you can use it as an X Terminal, though
(with the VXT sotfware)
....
comment (Rainer Landes:)
I tried it before. It works with the M38SPX, but no
TCP/IP ( -> not useful for Xwindows to DEC alphas)
It does not work with the M78 at all.

Yeah, unfortunately. I had a lot of vt1300 Xterminals (which are 3100's
with SPX graphics), You can run EWS (vaxeln) or VMS on them.
...
Thanks again to everybody!
