SUMMARY: tar & placing files in a new directory

Many thanks to the 17 people who have responded so far!

Most of the messages pointed to the same solution; the one from Dick Abraham
summarises them well:

"tar -xvs will strip the leading slashes from the restored path names.
Which will give you what you want

tar -xvP /mnt/giss will remove the /mnt/giss from the restored path names.
Which will also do what you want."

I tried the "tar -xvs" option and I was able to untar the files onto my
/ibm/pe/data/sonomagis directory just fine. It did leave me with a very
long pathname before I got to the data
(/ibm/pe/data/sonomagis/mnt/giss/gisdata/lotlines), but that was okay with
me. I think if I have used the second solution (tar -xvP
/mnt/giss/gisdata), I could have shortened the path name.
