My original posting is at the end of this message.
Summary:
- It seems that the best solution will be making the move to NSR.
- A temporary solution (the current one) is to separate the backup
into groups of files which fit onto one tape.
- to change the current tape for the next one in the stack, take the
device offline: "mt offline". (why? I don't know, but it works...)
- A method which I have yet to try (too busy, and all that) is:
1. Shut down database.
2. Use the clonefs utility to clone all relevant filesets.
3. Bring database back up.
4. Backup the cloned filesets.
5. Remove cloned filesets.
This will work in our environment because it is not a realtime
system, and the database will be backed up while not in use.
Thanks to all who replied.

Matt

=I am looking for an optimal solution to backing up about 120GB worth
=of data (mostly Oracle data files) using a TZ877 tape stacker.
=
=To this point, I have not been able to get the stacker to
=automatically change tapes once a tape has become full. Digital
=support says it is a bug in "vdump" which will be fixed in a later
=release. Sure. They informed me that the best way to use the tape
=stacker is by purchasing NSR. There is no problem in doing this, but
=the backup requirements are very simple: when a tape gets full, grab
=the next one.
=
=So: has anyone found a reliable way of doing this?
=
=Additionally, I understand that there is an Oracle product which
=allows you to back up database files while leaving Oracle online
=("obackup"?).
=
=Can anyone offer any suggestions on backing up large volumes of
Oracle
=data, while leaving Oracle up?
=
=System details:
= Alpha 2100/250
= 512 MB RAM
= DU 3.2C
= Oracle 7.1.6
