pop

I was trying to have my pop server running from inetd instead of standalone, so
I added it in the inetd.conf file and killed the running popper, my problem is
that when I test it by logging on through telnet, it does come up then closes
the connection after a few moments, what could be going on?

My other problem is that since it wouldn't work that way, I remmed out the line
in inetd.conf and restarted it so I could restart the popd by hand again as
standalone, but it doesn't just start and go in the background, instead, it
starts fine and stays in the foreground and I can only get out by shutting it
down again, what am I doing wrong? I ran it by hand that way before, and it's
been up since then (several months)...

I checked the running processes while it was running by stopping it, it's parent
process is my own shell instead of root (it was running as root before), what's
going on?
