No real answers I'm afraid.
The reason I asked was because I am building up a collection of all the
local software we install (gcc, LaTeX, JDK, exim, exmh, etc) as
layered products. All the programs themselves live in /opt (to mirror the
way things are installed on our Suns) with symlinks in /usr/whatever. I
remebered seeing during the OS installation that when a particular subset
was selected, a message appeared saying that a dependent subset was required
and would automatically be installed. This may have been other jiggery-pokery.

The subsets I am building check for whether /opt is nfs mounted and if so
decline to present the /opt subset on the menu If /opt is locally mounted,
the /usr links subset is declined on the menus. There is however a dependency
set to ensure the /usr links is installed before the /opt programs.
What I also wanted to achieve was to enable the user on a machine with /opt
locally mounted to only have to select the /opt subset and be able to get
the /usr links selected as well. Having two subsets: One with the /usr links
only and one with the /usr links and /opt programs causes conflict (at least
the way I've been developing it - I've yet to try and actually create a
subset using gendisk - I suspect this may solve may problem). Failing that,
if /opt is mounted locally, both the /usr links and /opt programs subsets
should be presented (with the dependency check) when /opt is locally
mounted.

There is a constant fight here over getting software built and installed
on the Alpha and I'm determined to make installing Alpha software as easy
AND as manageable as possible. Using setld kits makes this a lot easier.
