Hi managers,
Last week we had 3 successive power blackouts in rapid succession which
took down all 10 of my Alphas. All but one seems to have survived the
bruising. This is an Alpha 3000/300L which now has networking problems.
Specifically the machine works fine as a standalone, but if you ping
other machines then typically there is an 85% packet loss. Also users
cannot log in because their home directories are NFS mounted from another
machine and the NFS service times out. Attempts to telnet in/out of the
machine also time out. However, system console tests show no errors.
In attempt to cure the prob I have replaced the ethernet cable, moved the
machine to another port, and reinstalled the system software (DU
4.0B). None of this has helped.
So before I go the hardware route, I would be grateful for any advice.
For example:
Is there anything else worth a try?
Do these symptoms sound like a damaged ethernet port to you?
On the 3000/300L there is no seperate ethernet card - therefore I need to
replace the entire mainboard, right?
Any ideas welcome!
Chris
