Summary on storage-works II

Earlier, I had summarized concerning the availability of storage works
cases. Yes, it seems you can't get storage works cases any more.

Below are the reponses I got. One location (Newman Group) is mentioned
as having SW cases for SCSI-2 disks, but not F/W.

We eventually bought some RZ29B's from Midwest systems. Puget Sound
Data systems also allegedly has these, and for less than what we paid
from Midwest (I believe). I don't have the number for Midwest handy.

accomodate the faster drives. I do not recall the part number of the
fans.

-- Dirk,
I have purchased many empty SSB cases from DEC vars/resellers :
American Computer Exchange is one that has had a stock of these items.
I usually put 4 gig Seagate drives that spin at 7200RPm with out a
problem. However you may need to set the jumpers to ID the drive by
hand depending on your drive.

Yes, that's my understanding. We recently purchased some from Midwest
Systems, so I think there may be several alternatives. I don't have
the specifics, alas.

Dear Dirk,
Randy Perry at Aspen Systems asked that I respond to the email you sent
him regarding the drives you want to add to the 2100. Digital no longer
manufactures the generic drive cases which is what you would need to
purchase to install your drives in the 2100. They stopped selling these
recently because the RZxx are now certified to run in all type of
systems ie. HP, Sun. They have caused alot of problems in the
marketplace which I am sure you are aware of. If you have a DIGITAL
maintenance site agreement you maybe able to request that Digital supply
these for you.
Other than that, I can only recommend that you consider an external
storage option. A 7 bay expansion box with non-removable disks cost
around $ 550 for removable drives $ 1,050

If you have any questions or require any additional information, please
let me know. I hope to hear from you.

Kind regards,
Kathleen Brennan

>Also, I heard that to use 7200 RPM drives in a storageworks cabinet
>(like in a 2100), you need to upgrade the fan to improve cooling.
>Is this true, and to what fan speed does one need to upgrade?

nope.. when i asked dec about this, they said the 2100 was rated
for 7200 rpm drives plug and away you go.

if you want to use 7200 rpm drives in other cases however you'll
need the `high speed blower option' for the BA350.. or you'll
need to buy a BA-362/364 (2 or 4 slot) 7200 case.

cheers,

Hello,

It's true (from what I've seen) that SW cases are no longer
available from DEC. I have seen 2 sources of them (I forget
one, though it may be E.L.I.) and the one I'm getting some
cases from is the Newman Group for $150/each.

I've only been able to locate SCSI-2 cases, apparently fast/wide
cases (if there's any difference) are harder to find than hen's
teeth.

The requirement to add another fan is also true when using 7200rpm
drives in a tower, though not in a rack. The BA356 that I picked up
has two fan enclosures on the back. My understanding is that one
is thermostaticly controlled (I won't know for sure until I get the
remaining parts in and start everything up, this weekend I hope...).
You can find the additional fan as an add-on kit, I don't know what
the price is but the tower I picked up had 2 fans and a F/W SCSI-2 I/F
for around mid $600 range.
