More details regarding NFS problems

Firstly, thanks to Craig Hopewell for his comments regarding my dilemma.

Secondly, the problem has not gotten any better. I modified the rsize and wsize parameters in /etc/fstab, and although this did reduce the frequency of the errors, down to 1 per 10 seconds, instead of 1 per five, it didn't fully fix the problem.

The server is running OSF V4.0 (as described in my original posting), so I decided to move the client back to the same version. Problem however still exists.

The machine is newly installed, and although I have double and triple checked basic configurations, I am wondering if some underlying configuration file somewhere is inhibiting my success. Unfortunately the DEC installation, sysadmin and netadmin manuals

are little help.

Once again I am requesting help from those of you who may have any ideas, or who have run into something like this before. Included below is my original posting.

NFS is the only thing that is problematic, network and NIS are running fine, and the machines are located on a lightly loaded LAN.

After recently installing OSF 4.0B onto a DEC AlphaStation 250, I have had NFS
errors of the form

NFS3 server harmony not responding still trying
NFS3 server harmony ok
...

This usually occurs when attempting to execute large binaries such as Netscape
off the NFS mounted disk (/usr/local). Below is an outline of the two machines
in question, and other details.

NFS3 Server.

`uname -a`
OSF1 harmony.dstc.uts.edu.au V4.0 386 alpha

extract from /etc/rc.config

NFS_CONFIGURED="1"
export NFS_CONFIGURED
NFSSERVING="1"
export NFSSERVING
NFSLOCKING="0"
export NFSLOCKING
MOUNTOPTS="-i"
export MOUNTOPTS
NONROOTMOUNTS="0"
export NONROOTMOUNTS
NUM_TCPD="8"
export NUM_TCPD
NUM_UDPD="8"
export NUM_UDPD
NUM_NFSIOD="7"

NFS Client

OSF1 atlantic V4.0 564 alpha

`mount`

root_domain#root on / type advfs (rw)
/proc on /proc type procfs (rw)
usr_domain#usr on /usr type advfs (rw)
var_domain#var on /var type advfs (rw)
/usr/local_at_harmony on /usr/local type nfs (v3, ro, udp, hard, intr)
/home_at_harmony on /home type nfs (v3, rw, udp, hard, intr)

The client is a faster machine than the server. Is it possible that this is the
cause of the NFS errors? I have verified the network configuration with another
machine of a similar type, and everything checks out okay. There are no network
problems, ie no
 dropped packets or delays, between the server and client.

I tried mounting the filesystem as NFS2, but it just seemed to make it worse.

If anyone has any ideas, please mail me...

Many thanks again...

marty
