Optimal RAID configuration

Hi osf-managers,

I have a little Alpha 255 with 4 x RZ28 (with the possibility of
getting a 5th disk). I need to mirror (RAID 1) these disks.
Is it better to include your system disk as part of the RAID
set or to add a 5th disk for a system disk and mirror the 4 x RZ28 disks with only
the data on there? Obviously then the system disk would not be
covered for redundancy.

What about RAID 0+1, would this increase the performance?

Another idea would be to use lsm to mirror these disks in a similar
setup. What would be preferred in this case: RAID or LSM?

I realize how complex the above issues can get but all I need are a
few other opinions to reinforce the decision I'm about to take.

All suggestions welcome - I will summarize.
