Putting the current directory in the primary prompt string

We recently converted from an Ultrix machine to an Alpha machine. On
Ultrix, I put this command in everyone's profiles so that it would show
their prompt would show their login id and their current directory:
PS1="\($(whoami)\$$\) \${PWD##*/}->". For example, (andrea 6813)
spool->. I'm trying to do the same thing on the Alpha, but can't get it
to work. I can get it to display the logid id using (`pwd`), but can't
get the current directory. I'm using kornshell on both systems. Does
anyone know how to do this on an Alpha machine?

Thanks for your help
