Thanks you for the many responses about my question of how to read
binary.errlog file.
All of them point me to using uerf or some other similar 3rd party tools.
The following from Mr. Kym Schwarz is very informative:

You should install DECevent on your system ( its on the operating system
CD's ). Once this is installed do:

dia -R |more

where -R says to read the file from the latest to oldest


The unsupported method of looking at the binary.errlog is to use

uerf -R |more

uerf is not able to read the binary.errlog of the new systems ie 4100's
and some 8400's and is being replaced by DECevent.
