Most repsonses involved disconnecting the serial
line, but this did nothing. Peter Stern suggested
that I close the window from which tip was run,
but this didn't do it in my case.
Harald Lundberg gave this handy description of
the 'U' process state:
> When a process is in the 'U' (uninterruptible) state,
> it is not possible to kill it. You could try to play
> with the serial line though: remove the cable, reset
> the modem etc. Basically any interrupt has to come
> from the driver or the hardware.
