SUMMARY: how to boot alpha to console mode

The answer was simple - hit hit a few ctrl-c while booting.

As most people guessed, one of our managers had lost access to his root
account (it transpired that that the password had expired). To add to the
problem the boot-able CD was out on loan.
Once the system was rebooted using "boot -fl s" we used "cat" to create an
.rhosts
