Some advice needed

Dear Fellow Managers,
Again I am soliciting your advice. I have two AlphaServer 4100's using
LAT to connect to shared printers on Xyplex terminal servers. Recently
I stumbled onto something strange. It goes like this.

Send print job from one machine:
#4000_1 > lpr -Plp12 /etc/printcap

Attempt to send printout from the other machine:
#4000_2 > lpr -Plp12 /etc/hosts

I can collect the printout from node 4000_1 as it prints successfully.

I cannot collect the printout from node 4000_2. Device offline.

All entries still on the queue on lp12 on 4000_2.

The /etc/printcap entries for the 4000_2 machine was created by copying
the /etc/printcap from 4000_1 and copying 4000_1's /etc/latstartup.conf.

Both machines have direct access to the network device associated with
this print queue.

My question to the list is: Am I doing something wrong in configuring
the print queues like this or is my network manifesting some additional
problem that I have only just nicked?
