dtpad opening files read only

I have a Dec 3000/600 running DU 4.0d. Frequently when I use dtpad to open
a file for editing, it opens the file read only. It happens when I'm root,
and the file has write permission on it. It doesn't happen consistently.

Using another editor such as xedit works fine with the same file.

Any clues? Anybody else seen this behavior?
