file transfer from NCR m/c.....

hi all,
i have a little problem ,i have to transfer data files from an old
minitower NCR running ncr unix to my alpha m/c running digital unix
4.0b...
i used the tar utility with tar cvf /dev/rmt0 /data
and when extract the tar file on my alpha m/c it saya dosn't look like
tar file
can any body help me with that......
