SUMMARY: HSZ70 Raid controller on AlphaServer 800

The problem with our HSZ70 raid array turns out to be that
we accidently left out the 'HSZ70 Software solutions kit for Digital Unix'
from the order, so we do not have the PMCIA card. We also did not
get any manuals which might have told us what we were missing. We have now
ordered this. You would think the sales person would have said something.

I got many excellent replies - I am sure all of the information will come
in useful once we get the pmcia card and can actually use the array.

Subject: HSZ70 Raid controller on AlphaServer 800

 Hi,

We just received an AlphaServer 800 running DU4.0D, with
a HSZ70 raid controller. I am having difficulties understanding
how to get the alpha to see the hsz70.

The AlphaServer has a Qlogic ISP1040B scsi controller, which
the raid array is connected to.

We somehow did not receive the software for the HSZ70, but I
would think the device should show up anyway. Is this a wrong
assumption?

What software do I need in order to - see the device
                                       - configure the disks on the raid
                                         array

Hello.

The PMCIA card, the same type used in laptops (approx: 1.5" X 2.5" X 1/8") is
installed in the HSZ70 system under a metal cover. This cover is held in place by
2 plastic pull tabs that are black in color. Since the green operational light is
on solid, my guess is there is not card. To verify, remove the cover by pulling
on the 2 tabs and it will come off. If the slot is empty, there is no card. If
the slot is occupied, then some other H/W error has occured.

To fix the missing card condition, first shoot sales person who sold this
incorrectly, then order the HSZ70 Software solutions kit for Digital Unix. The
part Number is QB-5SBAB-SA/SB. The system will not work without this part.

The only necessary software is the firmware of the HSZ70
which comes on PCMCIA cards. The manuals that comes with
the software distribution will describe how to setup the
controllers using a terminal. I think the only necessary
setup is to "SET THIS ID=" and "SET OTHER ID=" command
to set SCSI IDs that the controller will present.

Once this is done, you should be able to use hszterm to
perform CLI commands. If you don't have any documentation,
then find out where it walked off to, because you will
        need to configure the subsystem.

Valerie,
You will need to setup up your containers on your hsz70 before you will
be able to see them from the console of your system..
Either connect a vt100 to the hsz70 on the front, or use a cable to
'tip' into it..ie, cable from your one of your serial ports on the
alpha, to the console port of the hsz70...
If you have no manuals, just type in a ? at the hsz> , and it will give
you help..
some commands that may help you are:

show [disk,device,this,other,unit,raid,stripe,mirror,?]
add [raid,stripe,mirror,jbod,?]

where the ? will give you more options for each command.

The hsz's have very good built in help.

Hope that helps, Tyler

You should be able to
1) See the Adapter card from the >>> prompt and then from UNIX
2) configure the raid and show devices back to the UNIX box
3) config the drives on UNIX
They have the storageworks command console avail off of
www.storage.digital.com I would pick that up. I believe if you have a
supported rev of the OS you shouldn't need to load any additional software
to see the array.

Valerie,
1) try booting with genvmunix to determine that DU can see the controller.
You shouldn't need any extra software to access it from UNIX.
2) Configuration of the controller is best performed by attaching a console
terminal to the local console port on the HSZ70 (should be a DEC423 MMJ
connector). Hopefully you have a HSZ70 Array controller user's guide.
I recommend running the menu driven utility CFMENU. It will walk you
thru defining the devices, units and disks once you understand what
all needs to be set up. If this is your 1st HSZ, I STRONGLY urge you
to find somebody to help you -- your local DEC tech, DEC systems
consultant, another local DEC user, etc.
You can obtain HSZTERM from DEC which allows you to "connect to console"
on a HSZ controller from a UNIX terminal. I find the direct console
   setup safer to use...
3) If you have access to DSIN (the Digital Software Info Network, usually
you need a s/w mainenance contract), open up the Digital UNIX database
and search for HSZ, UNIX and SETUP. There is a tricky algorithm for
computing UNIX device names vs. HSZ unit numbers that you will need to
understand so that you can MAKEDEV.
This is a VERY cursory answer for you, the actual instructions for what to
do depend on what your configuration looks like, what you want to do with
it (RAID-1, RAID-3, RAID-5, spares, autofailover, etc.). I would not want
to give you the idea that it is simple and straightforward. But, it does
make sense once you understand all the bells and whistles...

Valerie,
You do not need any software at least for seeing it
	under DU4.0D.
But, I guess you definetly need to make sure you
	have the right cables, etc.
	As far as HSZ70 configuration:
	1) Make sure you have the controller firmware (this is
usually shipped seperate). This is a "pcmcia" type
card that slips into the actual controller. The card
should be in the package that has the manuals.
If the firmware card is already in place then you are
          set.
	2) Connect a vt510 or any terminal that can talk to the
console port ( which is a RJ45 type connector). You
can even hook a Laptop or pc and configure the serial
	  port to talk to it.
	3) Then on your screen you will see HSZ70> prompt. Refer
to the manuals to set up your RAID configuration.
As far as Digital Unix 4.0D configuration:
	-----------------------------------------
	At the alphaserver console prompt:
	P00> show devices
it should list your HSZ70 devices .
Of course I am assuming that you did the power down and
power up sequence after connecting the HSZ70 to the
	Alphaserver .
Then, you just boot the generic kernel (it should build
	the new devices)
	P00> boot -file genvmunix
	After the boot do a
	# doconfig
and you are all set (of course, shutdown and reboot again)

9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, Xon/Xoff flow control
... should be what I would expect to work. I don't have a '70 myself to
verify... Make sure you have the correct pinout/wiring for the DEC423,
you might be null-modem where you need pass-thru or vice versa... I have
AlphaServer 8200's and I can just unplug my console terminal and plug it
into the HSZ...

OH yeah... Forgot to add that until you get some units defined on the
HSZ, it is reasonable that DU won't show anything... The HSZ itself isn't
really a "device" per se. Only the defined units show up as devices...
