The answer is:

I had set a second IP address for a second Class C address on my interface
in the /etc/rc.config file. I had done this earlier in order to get machines
on that subnet to see my Samba server. Since then I have set up a DNS server
and no longer need that but have never removed it. Anyway, I talked to
Digital
Customer Support and they had me telnet in from one machine to the other.
Then they had me do a last|more. The address that I came in from was that
second IP address. When I put that address in the .rhosts file and the
/etc/hosts.equiv file everything worked like a champ.

Amazing what little things will mess one up.
