How to count file descriptors

Managers,

On our AS4100 running DU4.0D, we're running into problems with
Ingres telling us it can't open enough files per process. It
gives NOFILES as the relevant parameter, though param.h says
this is obsolete.

While that is being worked out (we shipped Ingres a copy of Appendix E
of the V4.0D release notes regarding upping the max files per process
from 4K to 64K), we're also trying to verify that the files per
process number is really causing a problem.

However, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do that. kdbx dumps
too much info to be useful, it would appear, and sar isn't on the system.

Does anyone know how to get a simple count of the file descriptors
in use per process for each of the processes active on the system?
We're working on extracting data from lsof output, but don't know
enough about lsof output (yet) to have much confidence in what we
are counting.

TIA,
Michael
