Hi all,
I have several DUnuix systems
A (V3.2g), B(v4.0b), C(V4.0d), ...
the problem is users can do ftp only to node A. Trying
#ftp B or C
results in
Name:(B:root): titze
530 User titze access denied.
Login failed.
(I.e. it didn't even ask for the password)
I compared most settings (and files /etc/inetd.conf,services...)
for nodes A and e.g. C but did not find any difference. It probably
may depend how I run these nodes. Node A was my first one. All
users are here on a local disk (/userd/users). I always enter new
users here, afterwards I copy the /etc/passwd to nodes B, C, ... (I
do not (yet) use NIS. I first will bring all my systems to the same
revision level). /userd ist mounted by NFS on B,C...
All normal users have /bin/bash as default shell. I sometimes in
the past installed bash on A and copied it to /bin on B, C,...
Now back to my problem: It may depend on bash (or the way I
installed it). I added a new user xxx on node C with /bin/sh as
default shell. And with this username I could login with ftp
without problems.
There are no problems for all users to login via telnet
#telnet B or C. (And because their was no need to do ftp to B,C
because all disk are NFS mounted on A, I dicovered the ftp problem
only accidentally)
Has someone a hint what is wrong with my environment? (I am not
very experienced with Unix, my background is VMS)
Thanks and regards
Otto
PS: Followup problem:
I cannot remove the newly created user xxx on node C. Trying
#removeuser for xxx
it displays
"This is the entry for (xxx) in the /etc/passwd file:
(...correct entry...)
"is this the entry you want to delete (y/n)"; y
But then
"Working...userdel: Specified user not found"
And indeed the entry is still in the passwd file. Of course I could
get rid of this but it is interesting what happens here.
