This is normal. The tulip device driver will step down the network card
when it detects an error. On our network our tulip cards, DE500, step
down to 256, 512, 1024 bytes, and then finally store-forward due to our
busy network interface.
If you execute 'netstat -i', you will note at least 2 errors -- once for
each threshold change.
