Hi folks,
We got a Qlogic QLA1040B adapter for our DPW 500au directly
from Qlogic instead of the the more expensive KZPBA part
directly from Digital. As with most projects where you want
to save some money, we'd run into some trouble.
The Digital's KZPBA card we have in our DPW and QLA1040 look
essentially identical. The only differences are:
KZPBA QLA1040
Card rev: PC2010403-11-E PC2010403-09-G
ISP1040 batch: MCL7E01/N9728D MIPL64/N9816D
The ISP1040 part numbers are the same on both cards.
Now the trouble begins: if I put the QLA card in the
third 32-bit PCI slot of DPW (first two slots are
occupied by the graphics card and KZPBA), the card is
not recognized by the console firmware, so that nothing
shows up under "show dev". "show config" actually lists
the PCI slot 10 as occupied, with unknown card having
vendor id 1077 (Qlogic) and device id 1020 (QLA 10[24]*
series). Taking the KZPBA out and putting QLA1040 in the
second PCI slot does not make any difference - it is
still not recognized.
If I try to boot genvmunix at this point, it recognizes
the QLA card as an ISP-based SCSI controller (no surprise,
since it is listed in /etc/sysconfigtab), but refuses to
work with is due to missing on-board firmware (which
should have been loaded by the console?):

My first reaction was to assume that our console firmware is too
old to deal with rev G of the QLA1040. I downloaded the most
recent version of the firmware (6.8a) from the Digital's ftp
site, and flashed it. Although it does contain a more recent
version of ISP firmware (5.54) compared to our previous rev
(which had 5.27), it still does not recognize the QLA1040 and
refuses to initialize it.
So, am I stuck with a useless piece of hardware or am I missing
something really obvious?
Regards,
/Serge.P
