problem booting from SRM console vs. auto_action

AlphaServer 1000
Firmware upgraded to 5.2

Server boots fine on powerup using system disk or CD-ROM
(BOOTDEF_DEV indicates appropriate device, and AUTO_ACTION
is set to BOOT).

Alternatively, when trying to boot from SRM (>>>) console,
(1) >>> set BOOTDEF_DEV dka0
>>> boot
or
(2) >>> set BOOTDEF_DEV dka400
>>> boot
or
(3) >>> boot dka400

(Also tried clearing BOOT_OSFLAGS).

the monitor (CONSOLE GRAPHICS or SERIAL does not make a difference)
flashes BIOS for a couple of seconds, switches to white,
and fails to display anything. Judging by the CD-ROM lights,
the device is active, but no way to tell more.

Monitor is a 17" CTX.

Thanks
