8200 weird crashes

An interesting problem which is puzzling me since the beginning of the
month:

o 8200/333, 2 CPU, 640Mb RAM, DU 4.0D, ample swap, unpatched
o running a postgres job as user postgres, query on 56Mb table,
        done before, nothing earth-shattering
o console (VT510) has

        vmalloc: unable to allocate
        vmalloc: unable to allocate

o machine dead. Hung, nothing works from console, no panic, no
automatic reboot no nothing. Nothing in /var/adm/crash, dia is
        silent too.
o hit reset switch, machine comes up as if nothing had ever
        happened according to logs.

The machine passes 48hrs of VET testing and console-level tests
without any problems.

Ideas?

While I'm at it: anyone care to suggest which patch kits I should
install on top of 4.0D?

Thanks,

Arrigo
