X server cannot be started

Hello all,

we are running DU v4.0d with no patches applied on a DEC3000/800.

For no good reason the X server (and CDE login) can't be started anymore.
The system boots as usual until the execution of /sbin/init.d/xlogin.
Then the following is displayed on the console:

[...]
>The system is ready.
>
>
>Digital UNIX Version V4.0 (MY_HOSTNAME) console

>**********************************************************************

>* Starting Desktop Login on display :0

As indicated, I can get a console login prompt by pressing enter.
If I log in as root and run /sbin/init.d/xlogin manually, I would get
just another login prompt.
If I ran 'Xdec :0', it would immediately dump core with a segmentation
fault.
If I ran '/usr/dt/bin/dtlogin -daemon' (which is basically what
/sbin/init.d/xlogin does), it would do nothing but show up in the output
of 'ps aux'.

Has anyone ever experienced this behaviour?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, since I'm clueless now.

TIA,
-Stefan
