The DU 4.0b OS is correct in its system assessment. The 4.0b Unix does not
have native support for the latest cards shipped with the Alpha 1000A's. A
response from Oisin McGuinness summarizes the problem:

The likely problem is you have a DE500-BA card; support for that is in
4.0D, or
in patch kit 6 or higher for 4.0B.
