SCSI disk failure?

Managers:

We've got an Alphastation running DU4.0B. We had numerous filesets in
an ADVFS domain built on a Seagate 23GB disk. We came in this morning to
find the machine down. Upon rebooting, the machine sees the disk, but then
cannot mount any of the filesets. It logs the following message when it
tries to mount each fileset:

Aug 28 09:39:18 endeavor vmunix: cam_logger: CAM_ERROR packet
Aug 28 09:39:18 endeavor vmunix: cam_logger: bus 1 target 0 lun 0
Aug 28 09:39:18 endeavor vmunix: cdisk_op_spin
Aug 28 09:39:18 endeavor vmunix: Device Not Ready
Aug 28 09:39:18 endeavor vmunix: Hard Error Detected
Aug 28 09:39:18 endeavor vmunix: SEAGATE ST423451W ^XST423451W
Aug 28 09:39:18 endeavor vmunix: Active CCB at time of error
Aug 28 09:39:18 endeavor vmunix: CCB request completed with an error
Aug 28 09:39:18 endeavor vmunix: Error, exception, or abnormal condition
Aug 28 09:39:18 endeavor vmunix: UNIT ATTENTION - Medium changed or target
reset

The drive was on, and it was recognized by the SCSI bus scan, indicated
a few lines before these errors in the log.

We got the machine running again using a few small disks we had lying
around, but now we are unsure if the problem is hardware related, or ADVFS
related. Has anyone seen these errors before? If so, were they caused by
some ADVFS corruption?

     Thanks!
